The Abused Women’s Active Response Emergency program (AWARE), was created to help protect abused women by giving them emergency necklace pendants and electronic security systems to alert the police in the case of danger.

The AWARE program installs alarms and provides electronic pendants to domestic violence victims who are at high risk of physical injury in their residence.  If the defendant should come to the home, in violation of the Order of Protection, the victim can press the pendant which sends a silent alarm to ADT Security.  ADT then calls 911 and gives information about the victim and the abuser. ADT Security is a government corporate partner. They donate the alarms and pendants. The 911 operator then classifies the call as a “crime-in-progress” and dispatches the NYPD to the scene with a high priority mandated by police.

Priority is given to victims who are in imminent physical danger in their homes from a
   defendant who might:

  • break into the home

  • cut phone lines

  • injure the victim or victim’s family

   Other considerations include:

  • the severity of the victim’s injuries

  • history of physical abuse by the defendant

  • whether the abuser is known to have weapons and has threatened to use them against the victim

  • whether the abuser has made homicidal or suicidal statements
