Caution During Holidays

As the holiday season draws near, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you all to use extra caution as you prepare for your upcoming celebrations.  Criminals are opportunistic, and much of the crime that occurs at this time of year can be prevented by simply exercising some additional vigilance.  Remain alert when shopping in crowded malls and stores.  Be aware of your handbags and wallets at all times.  Watch your bags closely, particularly when traveling on public transportation.   Be sure to lock your doors, and do not admit strangers into your home.  Celebrate the season safely.  Do not drink and drive.

Requests for money by unknown organizations are particularly common during this time of year.  Remember that many legitimate charities do use the mail to solicit donations.  However, mail scams are particularly popular during this season.  Do not respond to unsolicited requests.  You can contact the New York State Attorney General’s Office at 212-416-8345 to check whether or not a charity is registered.  If you fall victim to a mail scheme, you can file a complaint with the United States Postal Inspector (1-800-275-8777).  One way to prevent unauthorized mailings is to contact the Consumer Protection Board at 1-800-638-2772.

On behalf of my staff here at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, I wish you all a very happy, healthy and safe holiday season.
