Last year, I read about a group of women who the District Attorney honored as “extraordinary women of Brooklyn.” Will these honors be repeated in 2008? How are the women selected, and how can I nominate someone for next year's event?

Last March, in commemoration of Women’s History Month, my office honored 33 women from Brooklyn whose exceptional contributions to their families, friends, neighbors and communities merited their selection as “Extraordinary Women of Brooklyn.”  

These women all had impressive records of service to others, though most had not been recognized before for their dedication. Each day in March, on a giant calendar in the lobby of my office’s headquarters at 350 Jay Street, we focused on the special contributions made by each of the women. At the end of the month, the 33 women, including three of Irish heritage who were featured on St. Patrick’s Day, were honored at a special event at Polytechnic University. 

Rarely do we focus on the unsung contributions made by women who touch the common fabric of our lives each and every day of the year. The 33 women honored in March 2007 are our mothers and grandmothers, our social workers, our teachers, our doctors, our church and community leaders. These are women who not only nurture their families and friends, but also dedicate themselves to taking care of countless others in their neighborhoods and larger communities. They have made a profound impact for the good on those around them, and for their tireless service and dedication to the welfare of others, they deserved to be honored as “extraordinary women of Brooklyn.” 

In March 2008, my office will honor a new group of extraordinary Brooklyn women. I encourage all readers to submit the names of any women they wish to nominate for this special recognition by logging onto my office’s Web site  at www.brooklynda.org and clicking on the nomination link on the Web site ’s homepage.
