__________________________________________Ask the DA

I would like to bring to your attention the start of this season’s “Ask the DA” radio show. The show is an integral part of my office’s Legal Lives program, which for the past 18 years has been bringing the criminal justice system to Brooklyn’s elementary school classrooms.

“Ask the DA,” will return to the airwaves on WNYE 91.5 FM on Monday, October 27 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. This season, the show will be broadcast throughout the school year on Mondays at 1:00 p.m.

Students appearing on “Ask the DA” will present one of the Legal Lives program’s interactive lessons. At the end of the lesson, other students will have the opportunity to call in and share their views

.

Today, the Legal Lives program, which now includes special workshops on Internet safety, is reaching students in more than 300 Brooklyn classrooms. Every other week, my assistant district attorneys and teachers work together to present a specialized, law-related curriculum in which the consequences of drug use, bias, violence and other criminal acts are discussed. The goal of the program is to get the students to think before they act and make appropriate choices.

Students involved in the Legal Lives program also visit the courts, where they have the opportunity to observe court proceedings and talk with judges. The program culminates each year in a mock trial competition, which allows the students to compete while playing the roles of judges, attorneys, witnesses and jurors.

If you are interested in having your child participate in an upcoming “Ask the DA” radio show, or you would like your child’ school to participate in the Legal Lives program, please contact Michelle Desir at 718-250-2678.
