Could you describe some of the career opportunities that exist in a District Attorney’s Office?

The Kings County District Attorney’s Office (KCDA) is one of the largest prosecutors’ offices in the country, with over one thousand employees. About half of those individuals are assistant district attorneys. The other five hundred or so employees work throughout the office to support the assistant district attorneys in a variety of ways.

As you might expect, paralegals are assigned to bureaus throughout the office, as are clerks, secretaries and receptionists. Since we are a law enforcement agency, detective investigators and police officers are also on hand. Some of their duties include investigating cases, execution of search warrants, witness contact and production of defendants.

In addition to the more traditional prosecutorial and investigative bureaus, there are many other departments that exist within the KCDA as well. Our Information Technology Bureau employs the skills of those with computer expertise. The Operations Bureau oversees the daily operations of our office, which include the management of the physical plant, or building, within which we reside. Technical Services is yet another department of the KCDA. There you can find those who possess a talent for photography and videography. Our Graphics Unit is staffed by those trained in graphic design.

I am proud to report that I was one of the first District Attorneys to employ social workers throughout my office. These skilled counselors work with victims in such bureaus as Domestic Violence, Sex Crimes and Crimes Against Children. My Truancy program also utilizes a number of social workers who counsel young truants and their family members.

Careers within our legal system are many and varied. I believe that it is never too early to introduce this subject to young people. For this reason, I encourage my staff to touch on this topic when making their Legal Lives presentations to fifth-grade classrooms throughout Brooklyn. As many of you know, Legal Lives is the educational, law-related program which I created shortly after taking office in 1990. Some of your children may have already received a presentation on this topic or heard first-hand from one of my detective investigators, even a judge, about his or her career in law enforcement.
