In the wake of a number of natural disasters in the U.S. and abroad, I would like to share with my readers important information about preparing for these situations.

One of the primary goals of our criminal justice system is to maintain social order.  When a natural disaster or an act of terrorism occurs, panic and chaos can set in, and order and control can seem elusive.  Careful preparation and planning are the best ways to keep you and your loved ones safe in the event of an emergency.  Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  1. Set aside time with loved ones to devise an evacuation plan in case of a natural disaster or act of terrorism.

  1. Prepare a survival kit and adjust it accordingly for your home, car and/or office.

  • These kits should include:

  • First Aid Kit

  • Batteries

  • Water  (at least one gallon is recommended per person)

  • Radio

  • Canned food

  • Blankets

  • Backup cell phone

  • Medical supplies: prescription medications and dentures.

  • Disaster supplies: flashlight, batteries, radio, first aid kit, bottled water

  • Clothing and bedding: a change of clothes and a sleeping bag or bedroll and pillow for each household member

  • Car keys and keys to the place you may be going (friend's or relative's home)

  • Map of area

  • Safeguard important documents by placing them in the bank and/or in a  fireproof  and waterproof case in your home.

 3.   Important papers to take with you:

  • Driver's license or personal identification

  • Social Security card

  • Proof of residence (deed or lease)

  • Insurance policies

  • Birth and marriage certificates

  • Stocks, bonds, and other negotiable certificates

  • Wills, deeds, and copies of recent tax returns

4.  In the event of any emergency, always remember to seek direction
     from law enforcement officials.
