I entered into a contract with a construction company in December 2007. It has been almost nine months and the work has not been completed. I called the Better Business Bureau and they have not resolved the problem. What should I do?

The nature of your complaint is consumer-related, and therefore you should contact the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA). You can file a complaint with DCA by calling 311, or by visiting their website, which can be found at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/html/home/home.shtml.

Whether a construction contractor is licensed or unlicensed in New York, DCA regulates the contractor.

DCA offers website visitors the opportunity to check if a business is licensed in the following categories: home improvement contractors and salespeople, electronic stores, employment agencies, debt collection agencies, tow truck companies, and used auto dealers.

In the alternative, you may wish to consider filing a civil lawsuit against the contractor.

My classmate and I paid more than $10,000 to enroll in vocational school courses to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN). I later found out that the school is not accredited, and therefore I cannot sit for the New York State Board exam. What can I do?

To file a complaint, contact the New York State Education Department’s Office of Professional Discipline at
212-951-6400.

If you or someone you know is thinking about enrolling in a vocational school, contact the New York State Educational Department to see if the school is licensed.  You can visit the Education Department online at http://usny.nysed.gov/licensing/.
