This summer, as you are out at baseball games, riding the subway or just walking through Times Square, follow these important safety tips to prevent criminals from stealing your purse or wallet:

• Be careful not to display your money in public.

• Be sure your necklaces and other jewelry are not visible.

• Keep your keys separate from your purse, preferably in your pocket. If your bag is stolen, the thief will not have access to 
  your home.

• Minimize the amount of money, credit cards and valuables you carry by only taking items that are necessary for the day. 
  Divide money between your purse/wallet and pockets.

• Be particularly aware of your purse/wallet in crowded situations, such as subways and buses. Have all wallets or
  electronics in front of you.

• Pickpockets often use a diversion to get your attention while they attempt to steal your wallet from your purse. They often
  work in teams. One will bump into you while the other reaches into your bag.

• When walking with a purse, keep it over your shoulder on a short strap with the flap facing your body.

• Never hang your purse over a chair in a restaurant. You should place your purse on your lap.

• Be aware in parking lots. Thieves often approach a woman alone in a car.

• Ride in the conductor’s car when you travel on the subway at night.
