I recently heard about a rash of teen muggings in my neighborhood.  My teenager walks to and from school. What can I do to keep him safe?

As parents, it is important to advise our children about the risks which exist, while at the same time reassuring them that the likelihood of being victimized is very small.  However, children need to know that there are steps which they can take to further minimize their risk of victimization.

Below are some important safety tips to discuss with your child:

• Students should travel in pairs or groups, whenever possible.

• Be careful not to display money in public.

• Be sure necklaces and other jewelry are not visible.

• Do not prominently display laptops, iPods or other electronic equipment.

• Keep keys separate from your knapsack, preferably in your pocket.  If your bag is stolen, the thief will not have access to your home.

• Minimize the amount of money, credit cards and valuables you carry by only taking items that are necessary for the day; divide money between your knapsack/bookbag and pockets.

• Be particularly alert in crowded situations, such as subways and buses. Secure your possessions in front of you.

• Keep your knapsack/bookbag securely fastened over your shoulders.

• When traveling by subway, ride in the conductor’s car if possible.

• Should an incident occur, report it to authorities immediately.
