With the holiday season upon us are there any security tips that you can share to help us stay safe while shopping and enjoying the season with our loved ones?

            With the excitement and rush at this time of year people sometimes become distracted and vulnerable to theft and other crime.  Some safety tips include having a neighbor or family member watch your home and retrieve your mail and newspaper deliveries if you are away for an extended period of time.  Also, lights should be kept on an automatic timer, and you may consider leaving a radio or television on so the house appears occupied.  Displays of gifts which can be seen outdoors should be avoided. Similarly, never leave packages in plain view in your car. 

            If possible, shop during daylight hours or with a friend in the evenings.  Stay alert to your surroundings, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.  If possible, pay for purchases with a check or credit card.  Notify your credit card company immediately if your card is lost or stolen, and keep a record of your credit card numbers in a secure location.

             If you carry a wallet or purse, be vigilant and aware of your surroundings at crowded shopping locations and transportation areas such as train and bus stops as they are prime targets for pick pockets.  Make sure your purse is closed, and try to carry it close to you, preferably in front of your body instead of to your side.  If carrying a wallet, place it in an inside coat pocket or front pants pocket, not in a rear pants pocket or backpack.

             Avoid carrying too many packages so that you can maintain your freedom of motion and visibility, and be vigilant of strangers who approach you for any reason as it is common for criminals to try different ways of distracting you in order to take your wallet or purse.

             As for holiday decorations, be sure that doors and passageways remain clear inside of your home, and that all décor is firmly mounted so that children or family pets do not accidentally tip the item(s) over.  If using decorative lighting, check the wiring to make sure that it is not frayed as damaged wiring can cause a fire.

            Finally, if you are attending any holiday parties do not drink and drive.  Make sure to have a non-drinking designated driver with you if you intend to consume any alcoholic beverages.
