case of an emergency. The District Attorney’s
office has given nearly 1,000 phones through its
Cell Phone program. Joining District Attorney

UNITY TASK FORCE
UNITY TASK FORCE - A
coalition of Christian and Muslim leaders all
members of a task force formed by the Office of
Brooklyn District Attorney met with DA Charles
J. Hynes on May 6, to discuss issues that impact
their community. Top on the agenda were quality
of life issues, including crime prevention and
immigration as well as how closely they as a
group can work together to effectively address
these problems. DA Hynes agreed, as requested by
the Roman Catholic delegation on behalf of their
bishop, to open a Brooklyn District Attorney
Neighborhood Office near St. Gregory the Great
Church in Crown Heights. These Neighborhood
Offices are where residents can bring their
concerns to the DA’s staff without having to
leave their own neighborhood. Each office is
open one day a week and is staffed by trained
counselors who offer assistance on a variety of
issues including elder abuse, domestic violence,
sexual abuse, drug or gang activity,
prostitution, burglary, robbery identity theft,
fraudulent loans and landlord-tenant disputes.

Homebuyers
Beware |
 |
In Brooklyn’s current real estate market, it
is important to be on the lookout for
predatory lenders trying to make a quick
buck off trusting homebuyers. Educated
consumers can avoid being victimized by
keeping the following guidelines in mind:
1. Bring
your own lawyer with you to handle
transactions and paperwork. Do not use
the lenders lawyer.
2.
Use common sense: if something looks too
good to be true, it probably is.
3.
Read everything very carefully. Do not
agree to a deal verbally; get everything in
writing.
4.
Do not agree to falsify information
pertaining to your income and your expenses.
5.
Don’t sign a blank document or a document
containing blank spaces to be filled in
for you later.
6.
Try to be as informed as possible, and don’t
let anyone convince you to take out a
bigger loan than what you need.
If you feel that you have
been a victim of predatory lenders, contact
the Attorney General’s Office or the
District Attorney’s
DA's Actions Center at (718)
250-2340. |
