The Firearms Prosecution Unit operates in the city’s only Expedited Firearms Court, which was established in 2016 as part of New York City’s ‘Project Fast Track’—an initiative designed to swiftly and efficiently dispose of illegal gun cases.

The Unit oversees prosecution of gun possession cases in which illegal firearms are carried in Brooklyn’s communities. By giving special attention to these cases, gun arrests are processed expeditiously, suppression decisions are more uniform and consistent, and cases are resolved more efficiently – sending a message that those who are caught with illegal guns will be dealt with swiftly. Two dedicated judges hear cases brought by the Firearms Prosecution Unit, which works in collaboration with the Trial Zones and the Crime Strategies Unit.

Getting illegal guns off Brooklyn’s streets and prosecuting those who carry them is a central focus of the District Attorney and that approach has helped reduce the numbers of shootings and shooting victims in the borough.
