In Brooklyn’s current real estate market, it is important to be on the lookout for predatory lenders trying to make a quick buck off trusting homebuyers.  Educated consumers can avoid being victimized by keeping the following guidelines in mind:

  • Bring your own lawyer with you to handle transactions and paperwork.  Do not use the lenders lawyer.
  • Use common sense: if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Read everything very carefully.  Do not agree to a deal verbally; get everything in writing.
  • Do not agree to falsify information pertaining to your income and your expenses.
  • Don’t sign a blank document or a document containing blank spaces to be filled in for you later.
  • Try to be as informed as possible, and don’t let anyone convince you to take out a bigger loan than what you need.

If you feel that you have been a victim of predatory lenders, contact the Attorney General’s Office or the District Attorney’s Citizen Actions Center at (718) 250-2340.
